• 생태적특징

    10~40m에 서식하며, 암초 근처의 미사질 모래와 돌무더기에서 발견된다.

• 형태적특징

    몸이 길고 원통형이며, 아래턱의 앞쪽에 송곳니가 8개 있다. 등지느러미의 가운데 극조가 가장 길고 극조와 연조 사이에 깊게 파인 부분이 있다. 살아있을 때, 등쪽은 붉은빛을 아래쪽은 흰색을 띠며, 등쪽에 U자 모양의 거무스름한 반점이 5개 있다. 몸의 아래쪽에는 9개의 반점 또는 짧은 막대모양의 무늬가 있는데 검은색, 붉은색, 탁한 노란색을 띤다. 등지느러미의 극조 부분은 일반적으로 검정색이고 바깥 부분에 크고 옅은 노란색 반점이 있다. 연조 부분은 가장자리가 검은색인 주황색 반점이 줄지어 있다. 꼬리지느러미의 앞부분에 검은색 점이 또는 줄무늬가 2개 있다. 등지느러미의 극조는 5개 연조는 21개 이다.
